Distributed practice: the approach that beats cramming

The forgetting curve, spacing and why little-and-often wins.


Here is the least glamorous finding in the whole of learning science: the same hours, spread out, produce dramatically more durable memory than the same hours bunched together. Not slightly more. Dramatically more. And yet cramming survives, because it feels like it works, right up until the day it matters.

The forgetting curve, honestly stated

In the 1880s, Hermann Ebbinghaus taught himself lists of nonsense syllables and tested his own recall at intervals from twenty minutes to a month. The result was the famous forgetting curve: memory falls off a cliff in the first hours and days, then the decline flattens. Much of what you learn today is gone by next week, if you do nothing about it.

Two honest caveats. First, Ebbinghaus was a sample size of one, memorising deliberately meaningless material; real, meaningful study decays more slowly. Second, the curve has been replicated: a careful 2015 replication by Murre and Dros reproduced the original shape, so the caveat is about the steepness, not the phenomenon. Meaningful or not, unrevisited memory decays. The curve is the enemy; the question is what fights it.

Every review resets the curve, higher

The useful discovery is not that memory decays. It's what happens when you return to material just as it's starting to fade: recall climbs back to full strength, and the new forgetting curve that follows is flatter than the last. Space several reviews out, each one a little further from the last, and the curve flattens until the material is, for practical purposes, stable.

This is distributed practice (the spacing effect), and it is one of the most replicated results in cognitive psychology. Cepeda and colleagues' 2006 meta-analysis pooled hundreds of comparisons: spaced study beat massed study almost everywhere it was tested, across ages, materials and delays. Their follow-up work added a planning rule of thumb: the best gap between reviews grows with how far away the test is. Reviews of study techniques consistently place distributed practice, alongside retrieval practice, in the top tier; highlighting and re-reading sit at the bottom.

Why cramming feels better than it is

Cramming's appeal is a cognitive illusion with a name: fluency. When you re-read a page for the third time in an evening, processing gets easier, and your brain misreads that ease as knowledge. The material is familiar, so it feels learned. But familiarity is recognition, and the exam demands retrieval: producing the answer from nothing. Massed practice inflates the first while barely touching the second.

Spacing feels worse for the mirror-image reason. When you come back to a topic after four days, retrieval is effortful; you strain, you half-remember, you check. That strain is not a sign the method is failing; it is the mechanism itself. Psychologists call it a desirable difficulty: the harder a successful retrieval is, the more it strengthens the memory. Cramming optimises how studying feels. Spacing optimises what remains.

There is one thing cramming genuinely does: it can scrape you through tomorrow morning's test. But the SQE assessments are not one morning. They test a syllabus assembled over months, and knowledge crammed in week two contributes nothing in week twenty.

Turning the same hours into a spaced schedule

The good news: spacing costs no extra time. It's a rearrangement, not an addition. Two rules do most of the work:

  1. Never finish a topic in one block. Whatever you study today, schedule a short return to it, days later, not hours later. The return should be retrieval (test yourself), not re-reading.
  2. Let the gaps grow. A workable expanding pattern for a months-away exam: revisit after roughly a day, then a few days, then a week, then a few weeks. Precision matters far less than the principle: a sloppy spaced schedule beats a perfect crammed one.

At week level, that means interleaving, which is spacing's sibling. Instead of Monday-to-Friday on one subject, rotate three subjects across the week:

  • Mon. Subject A: new material. Tue. Subject B: new material, plus 20 minutes retrieving Monday's A.
  • Wed. Subject C: new material, plus 20 minutes retrieving Tuesday's B.
  • Thu. Subject A again: new material, after retrieving last week's A.
  • Fri. Short retrieval sweep across all three; nothing new.

Each subject now gets automatic gaps, every session opens with retrieval, and Friday's sweep catches whatever is slipping. Same hours as the one-subject-per-week plan; very different exam-day result.

Let the schedule be someone else's job

The real reason candidates don't space their revision isn't scepticism; it's admin. Tracking what you studied, when, and when it's due back is exactly the kind of bookkeeping that collapses in a busy week.

Memory decays on a curve, and every well-timed, slightly-too-late review flattens it. Spread your hours instead of bunching them; return to every topic at growing intervals; make the returns retrieval, not re-reading; and distrust the comfortable fluency of a cramming session, because it is the feeling of a memory that will not be there when you need it. Little and often isn't a personality trait. It's a schedule, and schedules can be built.
