Visual techniques while reading
Mnemonics, dual coding and why your notes should look like something.
Most people read a page of revision material the way they'd read a novel: eyes moving, highlighter hovering, mind quietly elsewhere. Then they reach the bottom, feel vaguely reassured, and remember almost none of it a week later. The fix isn't reading harder. It's giving your visual memory something to hold.
Words are one channel. You have two.
The psychologist Allan Paivio spent decades demonstrating what he called dual coding: information encoded both verbally and visually is remembered better than information encoded either way alone. The two channels don't compete; they back each other up. When the verbal trace fades, the image often survives, and the image can pull the words back with it.
A related, very robust finding is the picture-superiority effect: people reliably remember pictures better than the words that describe them. Your memory for images is startlingly good. In classic recognition experiments, participants shown thousands of photographs could pick them out again days later at accuracy rates that words never approach.
Reading, on its own, uses one channel. Every visual technique below is really the same move: deliberately switching the second channel on.
Turn lists into shapes
Any time you meet a list, whether that's steps in a procedure, elements of a test, or a set of deadlines, resist the urge to just re-read it. Do something spatial with it:
- Draw the sequence as a path. A five-step procedure becomes five stations on a road, drawn left to right, with a small doodle at each stop. The order is now geography, and geography is hard to forget.
- Build an acronym, then picture it. An acronym on its own is a string of letters; an acronym you can see, the word it spells drawn as an object, is a retrieval hook with two anchors.
- Give quantities a size. If one item on the page matters more than the rest, draw it bigger. Your memory will keep the proportions.
Try it now with something neutral: a shopping list of eggs, batteries, string, oranges and a newspaper. Reading it five times feels like work. Imagining a newspaper nest holding four oranges wired to a battery takes seconds, and you'll still have it tomorrow. That asymmetry is the whole argument.
The method of loci, for ordered material
The oldest mnemonic on record is still one of the best-tested: place the things you need to remember at locations along a route you know well, such as your walk to the station or the rooms of your flat. To recall, you walk the route in your head and collect them.
It works because it borrows the strongest memory system you own, spatial memory, and lends it to material that has no spatial structure of its own. It's especially suited to ordered material, anything where the sequence matters as much as the items. Reserve it for the handful of structures you must be able to reproduce cold, because building a route takes effort; that effort is precisely why it sticks.
Highlighting is not a visual technique
It feels like one. It is not. In the major reviews of study techniques, highlighting and re-reading sit at the bottom of the effectiveness table; they produce fluency (the page looks familiar) without producing recall. A page that is 40% yellow contains no more structure than a page that is white.
Colour earns its place only when it encodes something: one colour for deadlines, one for exceptions, one for definitions, used consistently across all your notes. Then colour is information. Used that way, a glance at a page tells you what kind of thing you're looking at before you've read a word.
One honest caveat while we're here: "visual learning styles," the idea that some people are visual learners and others aren't, has repeatedly failed to find experimental support. Dual coding helps everyone. You don't need to be a "visual person" to draw a diagram; you just need a pen.
The one-page reduction
The most powerful visual habit is also the simplest: at the end of a topic, force everything you've read onto a single page, from memory, as a diagram: boxes, arrows, branches, tiny drawings, whatever the material wants to be. Then check it against the source and fix what you got wrong.
This works twice. The reduction forces you to find the structure (you can't fit everything, so you must decide what matters and how it connects). The from memory part is retrieval practice, the single best-evidenced study technique there is. The page you produce is almost a by-product; the thinking that produced it is the revision.
Do this once per topic and you also end up with a stack of one-page sheets that make final-fortnight review absurdly efficient.
Making it a habit while you read
You don't need to re-plan your whole system. While reading, keep a pen in your hand and:
- In the margin, doodle one tiny icon per section, anything that captures the idea. Quality irrelevant; the act of choosing the image is the encoding.
- Every few pages, stop and sketch the relationship between what you just read and what came before, even if it's just two boxes and an arrow.
- At the end of the session, close the book and draw the one-page version of what you covered.

Your visual memory is the strongest storage you own, and ordinary reading barely uses it. Pair every important idea with an image, a shape or a place; make colour mean something; and end every topic by drawing it from memory on one page. None of this requires artistic skill, only the decision that your notes should look like something, because things that look like something are the things you remember.
